Applying decals to your model can be the most tricky part, plus if they go on wrong or tear there isn't really alot you can do other than buy another sheet of decals and start again. It is therefore important that you know how to apply decals properly.

This is how I do it.

1/ You will need a shallow dish of clean warm water. You do not need a big deep bowl, the dish in the picture is perfect.

2/ You will also need paper towels and/or cotton buds to set the decal in the correct position and soak up any excess water.

The decals I am going to apply to this fuel tank are only spare ones and don't match with any particular kit, so please don't email to tell me they're not right - it's just for illustration.

3/ Cut the decal from the decal sheet and place it (face up if possible) into the warm water. It doesn't have to be submerged. Wait approx 20 seconds then check to see if the decal is loose on the backing sheet. If it is remove it from the water. If not, return to the water for another 10 seconds and check again.

When the decal is loose, carefully slide it into position on the model. Use a damp cotton bud to move and work it into position, the bud should also soak up any water, if you like you can gently dab the decal with a paper towel.

That's the easy ones done, now if you have to put on decal that fits into a curved area or indentation such as on this fuel tank, the soaked cotton bud it the best way to mould the decal into position. It can take some time to get right but it will work for you. There are a number of decal softening or setting solutions on the market to help with this, but I have never had to use them, the cotton bud works for me every time. Once in position, gently dab with paper towel to soak up excess water and leave to dry.

Once the decals are dry, I use a fine rubbing compound blend everything together and give a great finish.
